Gillmor Gang 2.19.11 (TCTV)

The Gillmor Gang conflated two major stories this week into one: Apple?s terms of service for app store approval, and Twitter?s actions regarding UberMedia. The noise regarding Apple being hauled in front of the DOJ illustrates just how powerful Apple?s strategy continues to be. As many point out, Android?s market share makes it virtually impossible to tar iOS with monopoly status. It?s almost as though Erick and Steve planned it that way, right down to Google following up with its 90% scenario as if to validate Apple?s 70% model. Stephen Elop also made that point with his decision to let Microsoft acquire Nokia, reminiscent of Yahoo?s failure to notice the ballgame was over when Ballmer pulled the trigger on them a few years ago. Then it was a seat at the search table; today it?s a seat at the mobile one.

How is Your Business Different

Creating a marketing and business plan for a small business can at times seem like an overwhelming task for a new business owner. Yet, it need not be. A business plan is simply a formal statement that contains a set of business goals; and a marketing plan outlines the necessary actions which the business needs to take in order to achieve its marketing objectives.

Effective Podcasts

Many people assume that podcasting is all about audio and fail to acknowledge the writing behind the show. Skilled communicators understand the type of planning required in order to pull off a clean final product. The most memorable and effective podcasts are always well planned. Some of the best podcast shows use a script and follow a structured format. The preparation that occurs behind the scenes is similar to what would take place for a radio show.

Innovative Business Use of RSS as a Technology

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a new way to broadcast corporate news and structured information. RSS offers a quick, easy corporate communication channel. The RSS contents are published as a feed and the feed's content keep customers, partners and journalists abreast of corporate news and information. The RSS feeds are read using a tool referred to as a news aggregator, or an RSS reader. The aggregator periodically checks to see if the RSS feed has been updated. As the feed is updated, new information will automatically appear in the RSS reader.

While RSS was at one point only considered to be a means to deliver news headlines, RSS has quickly become a powerful medium to disseminate all kinds of information. As traditional marketers are attempting to rein in content delivery, measuring e-mail open rates, click-throughs and conversions, Internet users are fighting to gain control over the content they receive. Savvy marketers and business owners are using RSS as a way to improve corporate communication and increase their external exposure and brand appeal.

Firefox F1 social sharing add-on gets vertical UI, big sharing tweaks

Mozilla Labs has posted another update to its F1 social sharing add-on for Firefox. Right off the bat, you'll notice a new vertical UI has replaced the full-width horizontal look of previous versions -- and rather than rudely shunting everything out of the way, F1 floats above your current Web page in a Firefox 4'ish notification box.

F1 now lets you share with your LinkedIn contacts, Twitter support has been improved with the addition of direct messages, and you can now post to a group wall on Facebook. Mozilla has also added a thumbnailed image of pages you share via Gmail to the F1 email template.

It's not all wine-and-roses with the new F1 release, however. Mozilla has announced that support for Firefox 3.6 has been dropped, and the new F1 also requires a restart when you install it (we liked the fact that the original was restart-free). Still, the new version of F1 is cleaner, faster to load, and provides a smoother sharing experience.

Mozilla has also posted a demo video to show you what F1 is all about -- check it out after the break!

Sushi Cat 2 is a fantastically fun feline feeding frenzy follow-up

Sushi Cat was one of the most addictive Time Wasters I played last year, both on my desktop and my iPod touch. Now, thanks to the the crew at Armor Games, there's now a sequel to the cat vs. sushi Pachinko-style madness. Sushi Cat 2 is every bit as addictive as the original, and it's also got some fun new tweaks.

One thing I noticed right off is that your plus-size kitty no longer gets wedged between two objects. He'll automatically scale down slightly to slip through after a few seconds. Another addition is golden sushi, which you can gobble up to earn new costumes for Sushi Cat. Wardrobe options include a pirate, ninja, clown, and even the elephant (which you won't unlock until late in the game).

There's still power-up sushi to eat, too, which enable things like soy sauce bombs, supermarket sweep mode, and pinball flippers (in true Pachinko fashion). Like the original, Sushi Cat 2 also allows you to save your progress -- so you're free to quickly close that private browsing session at work and return to your game later on.

Swype vs. SlideIT: Battle of the Android keyboard swipers

SlideIT vs. Swype
When you've got an itty-bitty touch-screen and need to pound out a quick email, the last thing you're going to want to do is type. I mean, tapping out a text message is fine every now and then, but when you're forced to type more than a couple of lines when you're on the go, sliding is definitely the way to go.

Sliding keyboards utilize the fact that each word, as it is typed, tends to create a unique pattern across the keyboard. So rather than tap-tap-tap, you just touch the screen and drag across the keys you wish to type on. The keyboard then uses the resulting squiggle to figure out what it is you were trying to type.

So far, so good. In theory it sounds great, but in real life things aren't always so silky-smooth. For example, what happens when you need to type a word the keyboard doesn't know, such as a name? Or when there's more than one possible interpretation for the squiggle you just drew?

That's where the differences between different sliding keyboards come into play. In this review I'll be focusing on the two best-known products: Swype and SlideIT. Continue reading after the fold to find out which one is better!

Nokia Plan B was just a hoax all along

There's been a lot of chatter about a "Nokia Plan B" over the past 48 hours -- the site was put up by "nine young investors" who outlined an audacious plan to rally shareholders, get themselves elected onto Nokia's board, and radically change the company's direction by firing Stephen Elop and committing massive resources to MeeGo. Needless to say, it resonated with many of Nokia's now disenfranchised fans and employees, and it made some serious waves -- enough so that Plan B was picked up by several major news outlets, including this morning's print edition of the Wall Street Journal.

There's just one problem, though: the "nine young investors" don't really exist -- according to the last tweet on the @NokiaPlanB Twitter account, it was all a hoax perpetuated by "one very bored engineer who really likes his iPhone." Ouch. That explains why the now-defunct site abruptly gave up the cause this morning after just 36 hours of existence, and it definitely explains why we never got any response to our emails trying to get further information. We'll award points for bravado and for doing a better job of rallying the troops than Nokia itself, we suppose, but we're sure quite a few Nokia fans are going to be crushed at this news. On the bright side, Plan B did inspire the excellent NokiaPlanS.com, which is sure to bring a smile to even the loneliest hearts in Espoo.

HP webOS 3.0 gets a video store, powered by Roxio

Yesterday saw a flurry of webOS unveilings from HP, from new hardware to a previously unseen version of webOS for tablets. They also finally dispelled any doubt about whether webOS would find its way onto HP PCs -- and it will, later this year.

But the reveals weren't all about hardware and software -- content played an important role as well. Amazon's Kindle app was demoed on the TouchPad, as was a slick offering from Time Inc. But with that dual-core processor and four times as much RAM as an iPad under the hood, the TouchPad can handle more than reading.

Which is why HP has tapped Roxio -- which has been a fixture on HP desktops and laptops for years -- for a video store in webOS 3.0. Users can watch trailers and rent, or buy titles -- but that's about all that has been revealed so far. We'll assume the actual playback will be handled by the webOS video player, but as the TouchPad gets closer to an actual launch we'll no doubt get a more in-depth look at Roxio's app and how it works.

Visualized: Google's perpetual conveyor belt of Android

You know those sushi places that have the pre-packaged rolls hypnotically scrolling by your face endlessly on a little conveyor belt? Well, picture exactly that... but with virtually every major Android device ever made instead of sushi. That was just one of the many visual treats we experienced at Google's Android booth at Mobile World Congress this year -- along with a dozen or so brightly-painted giant Android statues and a fully-functional slide from the second floor down to the first. We'd estimate there were perhaps 200 phones and tablets on the belt, ranging all the way from the original T-Mobile G1 up to prototype versions of the HTC Desire S and Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo. We'll admit, it was nigh impossible to resist grabbing at the clear acrylic capsules as they slid silently by, but fortunately, you won't have that problem when you check it out on video -- a safe distance from Barcelona -- after the break.
